If you’ve been in this profession for even a short while, you’ll know this truth deep in your bones: celebrants do far more than stand up, smile, and read a script. We are the calm in the chaos, the steady hand, the quiet fixer, the emotional anchor, the timeline keeper, the vibe‑setter, the problem‑solver, the unofficial wedding‑day therapist… and sometimes the person who literally holds everything together with a safety pin and a prayer.
And because of that, we don’t just turn up with a script.
We turn up with bags — magical, Mary‑Poppins‑esque bags — filled with things couples never knew they needed until the moment they desperately do.
Over the years, I’ve become known for mine.
Not because they’re glamorous (they’re not).Not because they’re trendy (definitely not).But because they’ve saved the day more times than I can count.
Why Celebrants Carry So Much More Than Words
A ceremony is a living, breathing moment. It’s emotional, unpredictable, and beautifully human. And humans… well, they forget things. They spill things. They panic. They sweat. They cry. They break zips, lose rings, smudge mascara, and occasionally unravel at the seams.
That’s where we come in.
As celebrants, we:
hold space for nerves, joy, overwhelm, and everything in between
manage the energy of the room before the couple even arrives
support the wedding party when they’re flustered or unsure
smooth out the timeline when things run late
fix problems quietly so the couple never even knows they happened
keep the ceremony flowing no matter what’s happening behind the scenes
protect the couple’s emotional experience like it’s sacred (because it is)
And to do all that?
We need tools.
We need backups.
We need “just in case” items.
We need things we hope we’ll never use — but are ready for when the universe decides to test us.
