Becoming a celebrant is one of the most rewarding paths you can choose. It is creative, meaningful, people centred and full of moments that genuinely matter. But it is also a profession that requires commitment, skill, organisation and a willingness to build a business from the ground up.

If you are wondering how to become a celebrant, what the role involves and whether it is right for you, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know. From understanding your why to developing your skills, from training to marketing, from managing your finances to building a sustainable business, this is the honest version of what it takes.

Start With Your Why

Before you look at training, websites or social media, you need to understand your motivation. Your why will carry you through the early days when you are learning, building and figuring things out.

Ask yourself:

  • Why do I want to become a celebrant?

  • What draws me to ceremonies?

  • What kind of celebrant do I want to be?

Some people are drawn to storytelling. Others love public speaking. Some want to support families through emotional moments. Others want to create joyful, modern wedding ceremonies. Your why will shape your style, your brand and your business.

The Skills You Need as a Celebrant

Celebrancy is not one skill. It is a blend of many. Some you may already have. Others you will develop. The diversity of the role can often come as a surprise to those considering this career path.

Here are some of the core skills every celebrant needs:

  • Writing skills  You will write ceremonies, scripts, vows, readings and personal stories. You need clarity, flow and the ability to write in someone else’s voice.

  • Public speaking  You must speak with confidence, warmth and presence. You need to hold a room, guide a moment and adapt when things change.

  • People skills  You will work with couples, families, suppliers and venues. You need empathy, patience and the ability to manage emotions.

  • Organisation  You will juggle multiple ceremonies, deadlines, meetings and admin. Systems matter.

  • Creativity  Every ceremony is different. You need imagination and the ability to craft something unique.

  • Business skills  Marketing, pricing, finances, client management, branding. This is the part many new celebrants underestimate.

You do not need to be perfect at all of these from day one. But you do need to be willing to learn.

Understanding the Role: What Celebrants Actually Do

Many people think celebrants simply turn up and deliver a ceremony. In reality, that is the smallest part of the job.

Here are the main elements of the role:

  • Client management  Enquiries, consultations, onboarding, questionnaires, communication, planning calls.

  • Writing the ceremony  Drafting, editing, personalising, refining, preparing scripts.

  • Choreography  Planning entrances, exits, rituals, readings, music cues and timings.

  • People management  Coordinating with photographers, musicians, planners, family members and wedding parties.

  • Delivering the ceremony  Holding the space, speaking clearly, managing nerves and adapting to the moment.

  • Business management  Invoices, contracts, scheduling, finances, marketing, social media, admin.

It is a beautiful role, but it is not a small one.

Being Self Employed: The Commitments You Need to Understand

When you become a celebrant, you become self employed. That means:

  • Managing your own time

  • Setting your own boundaries

  • Handling your own finances

  • Paying your own taxes

  • Investing in your business

You need to know how much you need to earn to live. You need to price your ceremonies in a way that covers your time, your costs and your expertise. You need to understand the seasonality of the role. Weddings are not evenly spread across the year. You may have months that are full and months that are quiet.

This is why planning matters.

Training: What It Covers and What It Does Not

Training is important. It gives you the foundations. But most training focuses on:

  • Ceremony structure

  • Script writing

  • Delivery

  • Legalities (depending on your country)

What training often does not cover is:

  • Marketing

  • Branding

  • Social media

  • Celebrant SEO

  • Client experience

  • Business strategy

This is where I come in. My corporate, business and online marketing background meant I understood how to build a business, not just how to write a ceremony. I went from zero to fully booked in eighteen months. I have now delivered more than one hundred ceremonies and I am consistently fully booked year after year.

I now coach celebrants and teach everything I learned, including all the mistakes so you do not have to make them too.

Talk to a Celebrant Before You Commit

One of the best things you can do is speak to someone who is already doing the job.

Ask them:

  • What does your week actually look like

  • What do you love most

  • What is the hardest part

  • What would you do differently

Hearing the reality will help you decide whether this path is right for you.

Marketing Yourself as a Celebrant

Marketing is not optional. It is essential.

You will need:

  • A website

  • Social media

  • Branding

  • SEO

  • A clear message

You need to know who you serve, what makes you different and how to communicate that clearly.

Marketing is not about shouting. It is about connection.

The Financial Side: What You Need to Know

You need to understand:

  • Your cost of living

  • Your business expenses

  • Your pricing structure

  • Your seasonal income patterns

You cannot build a sustainable business if you do not know your numbers.

The Seasonality of the Role

Celebrancy is seasonal. Weddings cluster around spring, summer and early autumn. Vow renewals and elopements can happen year round. Funerals are steady but emotionally demanding.

You need to plan for:

  • Busy months

  • Quiet months

  • Admin months

  • Marketing months

This is why boundaries and planning matter.
